Three Chinchilla Facts
Learn three simple facts about chinchillas.
Chinchillas are small animals with very soft fur. Here are three chinchilla facts to help us learn about them.
Fact 1: Chinchillas have very thick fur
The RSPCA says chinchillas have 60 to 90 hairs from each hair follicle. Humans usually have one hair from each follicle. This helps chinchillas stay warm in cold mountain places.
Fact 2: Chinchillas can jump very high
Chinchillas have strong back legs. The RSPCA says they can jump over six feet, which is about 1.8 metres.

Fact 3: Chinchillas need dust baths
The San Diego Zoo and the Merck Veterinary Manual both explain that chinchillas use dust baths to keep their coat healthy. Water baths are not the right choice for their thick fur.
These facts show that chinchillas are active, delicate, and need special care.

Why these sources?
I used the RSPCA because it gives animal welfare advice about chinchillas as pets. I used San Diego Zoo Animals & Plants because it explains chinchilla behaviour in student-friendly language. I added the Merck Veterinary Manual because it is a veterinary source and gives clear care advice about dust baths and safe homes. Using more than one source helped check that the facts were reliable and easy to understand.
